The Founder of the Bethany Congregation SD Rev. Fr RFC. Mascarenhas established Infant Mary’s Hostel in Kulshekar on 08.05.1943 for the children who are economically backward and orphans. The compassionate heart of Fr Founder felt the pain of the parentless children. He had a special love for them. The downtrodden and the poor had a special place in his heart.
In accordance with the vision of Fr Founder, Infant Mary’s Hostel provides home for the students specially girls from various parts of Karnataka. The purpose of its establishment is to help them in their education and all round development. Hostel gives admission for girls from first to tenth Standard.
The service to the poor and the marginalized at Infant Mary’s Orphanage was joyously rendered by the Wardens such as Sr Verena, Sr Alberta, Sr Philomille, Sr Monina, Sr Poma, Sr Esperie, Sr Medela, Sr Missericorse, Sr Maude, Sr Beatrice, Sr Doris, Sr Theodora, Sr Edward, Sr Joanina, Sr Edmund and Sr Vithalia. They took care of children with the able assistants and looked after them with maternal care. Presently Sr Jessy Preema is carrying on this great mission with the help of her devoted staff. Sr Anna Maria is the Correspondent and takes interest in this ministry. This orphanage has become the cradle of vocations to religious life.
Sr Jessy Preema with the help of Sr Elizabeth toils hard for the wellbeing of the students and motivates them to have an aim in life. The hostellers are given needed help specially supervised study, library facilities, spiritual animation, counseling facilities and also financial help. During the year many activities are conducted for the children. These activities help them to become service minded, morally strong and be good citizens of the society.
At present there are only 25 students among whom 13 are High School students and they study at Sacred Heart’s High School, Kulshekar. There are 12 primary school students and they attend St Sebastian Higher Primary School, Bendur. They hail from Bidar, Bagalkote, Chikmagalore, Kasargod and Dakshina Kannada districts. Majority of their parents are poor and illiterate.
