Sacred Heart Higher Primary school, Basarikatte was begun amidst coffee plantation which is known as ‘Switzerland of Karnataka’ situated in Koppa Taluk Chikmagalur district in the hilly region of Merthi Mountain. The main purpose of starting a Convent was to cater to the educational needs of the children of the locality and catechize Catholic children and families.
The school was blessed and inaugurated by Rt. Rev Dr Alphonse Mathias the Bishop of Chikmagalur on 30-4-1965 naming it as Sacred Heart Higher Primary School. Mother Clemence, Sisters Peace and Flavia were the pioneers.
On 01-06-1965 sisters began classes in English as well as in Kannada medium with 90 children presuming to continue in 2 sections, of English and Kannada medium. Since the education department did not approve the English medium it was closed down. It took 3 years to obtain recognition and government grant for Kannada Medium School. Because of the hard labour of many the school was granted the government grant in 1968-69. On 13-12-1982 it was registered under educational institutions and got permanent recognition. The school completes 51 years of existence.
The School has formed thousands of people and has given them a bright future. They render their services in various fields. Though it is situated in a village the management has provided suitable infrastructure for sports, science, and library in view of all-round development of the children from rural background. Importance is given to curriculum and co-curriculum activities. All the sisters and teachers take pain to impart education for life. Though now the number of the population and students in the school declining heavily, the sisters still continue to serve in the school. At present there are 76 students in the school with only one aided post and others being paid by the Management.
Divya Jyothi Ashram (hostel) for children was started in 2005 in support to the strength of the school which too is declining in strength. Inspite of all challenges and difficulties it continues to bloom and spread its fragrance far and near.
