Mariam Niketan Hostel was started in 1975 with five girls from neighbouring villages. It was started to educate the poor girls who could not attend the school due to distance and poverty. To fulfil the dream of our Fr Founder the sisters worked hard in the past to identify and accommodate the girls to complete their basic education in Punjabi Medium School.
The following sisters in the past have worked as a Hostel Wardens – Sr Melvis, Sr Gleva,
Sr Acquiline, Sr Cedra, Sr Gracy Pinto and at present Sr Lyra Losrado. All of them have taken keen interest in their all-round development. At present there are 16 girls belonging to different parishes of Jallandhar and Simla - Chandigarh diocese. They are loved and given opportunities towards their physical and spiritual development. They enjoy good health and are happy to get good education. There is no separate hostel building for the inmates; they are accommodated in one of the halls of the Convent building itself.
Mariam Niketan Hostel has become acradle for the vocations to religious life. Sr Alveena Clare, Sr Gurpreet Kaur (second year novice) and Ms Shareen (candidate) who were the beneficiaries of this hostel have joined Bethany and Ms Veronica has a religious Congregation in Jallandhar Diocese and Sr Margaret made her perpetual profession in the UrsulineFranciscan Congregation in Mangalore. It is indeed a good news to be celebrated!
The Sisters in Bathinda enjoy the presence of the hostel girls as they add life and energy to
their daily routine. We look forward for more vocations to this hostel in the near future too.
