St Sebastian’s School was opened in 1914 by Rev Fr Raymond Francis Camillus Mascarenhas, the then parish priest of St Sebastian’s Church, Bendur. But it had the origin in the year 1908 as St Francis School, started at Kadri, Mangalore by Mr Peter Lobo (Pedru Shenoy. After the death of Mr Shenoy and his son, the school was handed over to Mr Marcel D’Souza, a teacher of the said school. Fr Raymond took over the management of this school in 1916 and later in 1918 amalgamated it with the already existing St Sebastian School started by him. The new building constructed in the premises of St Sebastian’s Church housed this school.

To provide good education and to facilitate better faith formation of the students of the school, Fr Mascarenhas recruited a few teachers from the parish. From among them Flora Mathias (Sr Clare), Alice Mathias (Sr Lourdes), Marcelline Menezes (Sr Martha), and Regina Gertrude Gonsalves (Sr Gertrude) became the first members and nucleus of the Bethany Congregation, founded by Rev Fr RFC Mascarenhas on 16 July 1921. Under their guidance, the school made rapid progress. To make their teaching more effective and relevant in keeping with the prevailing situation, St Margaret Mary’s School was opened for girls in 1921, while St Sebastian’s remained as boys’ school. With the passage of time and new trends in the field of education both the schools decided on co-education.

Later on, as the city was developing, education in English Medium became a matter of honour and prestige.  With this new trend the strength in both schools dwindled drastically. On 31 May 1986, St Margaret Mary School was merged with St Sebastian School under the Catholic Board of Education. The new institute continued to operate in the old St Margaret Mary’s School building under the name, St Sebastian’s School. In 1987, the administration of this school was handed over to the Sisters of the Little Flower of Bethany.

Currently, the running of the said school depends on the response of the parents of Shaktinagar - Kulshekar to send their children to this school. Mr Vinay Hedge, the President of the Nitte Education Trust has been availing his bus service to collect these children from Shakti-Nagar and reach them back daily. The rest of the children come from the construction sites in our neighbourhood.

In the year 2008, the school celebrated its centenary.  At present the student strength of the school is 162. , there are 9 teachers. At present Sr Nancy BS is the headmistress of the school and she along with her dedicated Staff makes efforts every year to increase the strength year by year by visiting the families at Shaktinagar and in the neighbourhood regularly. The school betterment committee and a few generous people come forward every year to provide them with books, uniform and sandals. The school betterment committee and the Parent Teacher Association is functioning effectively.

Our goal is the all-round development of the students. Those who are weak in studies are given special attention and coaching. The students participate in the curricular and co-curricular activities organized at the cluster and taluk level. Moral values are inculcated in the students and catechism is taught to Catholic children on regular basis. Facilities from the Government are availed especially the scholarships for SC, ST and the students of Minority Community. We pray this institution the fruit of our Founder’s vision continue to live his ideals and serve the poor hidden in the city.
