Bethany School, Sulantu, West Bengal (Estd: 2006)

Bethany School is located in Sulantu village under Jahanagar Gram Panchayat in the district of Burdwan in West Bengal. It is located by the Kalna-Katwa Road. It is a co-educational institution catering to the education of children coming from Sulantu, Parulia, Purbasthali, Nabadwip and other neighbouring villages. Bethany School is a Catholic minority institution established and run by the Bethany Educational Society ® Mangalore, which is registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860.

Bethany School Sulantu had a humble beginning on the 8th of May 2006 in a rented room of Mr SubodhKan, a retired school Headmaster, in Parulia Bazaar with 34 students admitted to Nursery class. It was also the home of Bethany Sisters which was canonically erected on the 31st of May 2006 by Sr Canisia, the Provincial Superior of North East Province during the Eucharistic celebration officiated by Rt. Rev. Cyprian Monis, Bishop of Asansol Diocese (WB). Sr Hildigard was appointed as the first Superior and H.M. and Sr Assumpta Maria and Sr Sunita Jyoti as members.

The Congregation of the Sisters of the Little Flower of Bethany was assisted by Fr Henry Rodrigues, the then priest-in-charge of Dhitpur mission to purchase 2.92 acres of land in Sulantuvillage from Mr. Rabindranath Saha, a retired high school teacher. The land was purchased in two phases. In the first phase a 1.45 acre of land was registered on February 26, 2006 and another piece of land measuring 1.47 acres was registered on 30th May 2006.

On 17.10.2006 foundation for the K.G. block was laid in the new property purchased by the congregation. The construction work was taken up by Mr. Dulalkrishna Saha and was completed in a short duration and the blessing and inauguration of this building took place on 24-04-2007. The classes were held in the newly constructed building for the new academic session. By the time the number of students had risen to 183 which was a sign of growth of the mission and the fruit of the tireless efforts of Bethany sisters.

The Superior General, Sr Jyoti and her council gave permission to the Provincial Superior to construct a new school building to accommodate the growing number of students. Hence, Sr Noeline, the Asst. Provincial Superior laid the foundation stone for the new school building on 01-03-2008 and it was blessed by Fr Thomas Tete. Mr Amiya Das, the architect designed the building and the construction work was carried out by Mr Haldar. The building was constructed in five phases and the entire expenditure was borne by the congregation. From 2010 onwards the classes are held in the new building which is spacious and well equipped with necessary infrastructure.

23rd June 2016 marks the change of leadership at Sulantu. Sr Cleopha, the Provincial Councillor installed Sr Ordilia as the Superior of the Convent and Sr Saritha as the Headmistress. The staff and students bid a tearful farewell to Sr Hildigard, the first Headmistress of the school who was on transfer after serving the infant institute for six years.

The newly constructed building was inaugurated on 3rd February 2014 by Rev Sr Wilberta BS, Superior General of Bethany Congregation and President of Bethany Educational Society. It was blessed by most Rev Cyprian Monis, Bishop of Asansol Diocese. The school building is dedicated to Msgr. R.F.C. Mascarenhas, Servant of God, the Founder of the Bethany Congregation. Bethany School is registered to CBSE Board, Delhi.

Bethany School Sulantu is indebted to all those who have been instrumental in providing this golden opportunity for the children of this area to avail English medium education. The goal of Bethany School is to impart quality education for the all-round development of its students and to bring fullness of life for all.
